Korea: Notes from the Edge

Andrés Felipe Solano

CHRONICLE. UNIVERSIDAD DIEGO PORTALES, 2015. 205 PAGES.

LIBRARY COLOMBIAN NARRATIVE FIRST PRIZE

From the moment he arrived in Seoul, Andrés Felipe Solano started to take notes and photographs, forcing himself to experience everything he wrote down. The chronicle is split into four sections, one for each season: rest stops on a journey with contrasting goals. On the one hand, Solano is striving to adapt to his adopted country, trying to get a job and a house, to fill his refrigerator, to find a woman to love and perhaps most difficult of all, to build a library: "When I put the first volume on the shelf, I felt like a conquistador thrusting his sword into the top of a hill, claiming new land for himself." On the other, he is moving further and further away from the country of his birth: "I distance myself from Colombia, from the people who have surrounded me for years... It's unsettling but it also gives me an immense sense of tranquillity to live so far from a country where everything festers in indolence."
