A Mediocre Conspiracy

Ernesto Mallo

NOVEL. SIRUELA, 2015. 168 PAGES

Ernesto Mallo plunges us into a tempestuous story of love, murder, contract killers and struggles for power and impunity.

Argentine fiction and film has often depicted the bloody period of the Videla dictatorship, but rarely do they explore the stage that came immediately before it. The precursor to the large scale state terrorist regime was the so-called Triple A (Argentine Anticommunist Alliance), a paramilitary group that dealt brutally with anybody who got in the way of the man seeking to control the country with an iron fist: José López Rega, nicknamed El Brujo (The Warlock) because of his interest in black magic.

In this prequel to the Detective Perro Lascano series, we meet the young but already accomplished investigator. To keep him away from the case, the police high command send him to investigate the apparent suicide of an elderly German. However, the assignment merely sends him directly into the clutches of the contract killers: a world where no-one can be counted on or trusted. As Lescano proceeds in his enquiries, he will meet Marisa, with whom he will have an epic love affair.
