The Magical Lamp

ESSAY. PENGUIN RANDOM HOUSE, 2012. 98 PAGES.

Four essays on education, and in praise of reading.

Our era is paradoxical and exciting, it might be described by Oscar Wilde's words on certain doctors: "They know everything, but that's all they know". Journalism has not kept us informed; it has entertained us. Its dynamism has ensured that we are only interested in things for their novelty value: if they didn't happen yesterday they're no longer important. Humanity has an ocean of accumulated knowledge and in recent years a universal store of knowledge has been placed at our fingertips and before our eyes, it's as though almost any information is accessible. But it may be that our information has never been so fickle, our knowledge so fragile, and our wisdom so doubtful. This shows that information is not enough: we need a system of values and criteria so that this illustrious store of universal memory becomes something more than wasted bilgewater.
