La lectora

Sergio Álvarez

NOVEL. RBA, 2001. 250 PAGES

"I was kidnapped to read a novel." This is the opening line of La lectora (The Reader), an entertaining tale about a kidnapping, the Bogota underground, drug trafficking and easy money. Adolescents lost in their own lust for life, assassins without targets or direction, taxi drivers in love with the wrong woman, prostitutes anxious to find a soap opera stud and drug traffickers consumed by their vices. A whole web of characters that come together to create a brave, energetic novel that offers no quarter to the reader or its protagonists. In this novel everyone seems to be stumbling hopelessly toward the abyss and yet it is also possible to find many of the essential factors that make up the confused, turbulent state of contemporary Colombia.
