On Hard Skin

Fernanda García Lao

NOVEL. EL CUENCO DE PLATA, 2011. 160 PAGES.

A morbid novel? Possibly. Although here the morbidity is just one more delicious ingredient used to endure a tragedy and the morbidity and the tragedy are just two more delicious ingredients in a detective story. This book presents itself as a toy, a puzzle to put together not just a woman but an entire period, a country and, subtly, certain fashionable social strata. For example, ‘artists' who start their career in theatre but also, in case the dice of fame don't roll their way, make television advertisements or appear on reality shows, or self-help groups in a unique sampler, a directory of characters classified like advertisements. And, finally, the legend of organized crime that grows up around organ trafficking.
