The Truth according to Virginia

María Fasce

NOVEL. PLANETA, 2002. 256 PAGES.

Virginia is coming up for 30. She has a wonderful husband, a loving 8 year-old son, and a very possessive mother. She keeps her intimate thoughts and theories in a small notebook and then turns them into articles and columns for the magazine she works for. Her girlfriends are emotionally unstable and rather confused as to men’s roles in relationships with women. Virginia’s life ticks along normally until one day she gets an e-mail from Santiago, an old flame who is coming to visit her. Virginia feels she has already been unfaithful to her husband Diego with Santiago once, though this cannot exactly be labelled infidelity, and Santiago’s visit has Virginia doing some serious soul-searching about her marriage and affections. Taking advantage of her son being at summer camp, and relying on her husband’s sunny confidence, Virginia puts Santiago up at home to exorcize the temptation. But events take an unexpected turn and Santiago’s stay brings unsuspected revelations for them all.
