The Elevator Theory

Sergio Chejfec

NARRATIVE. JEKYLL & JILL, 2016. 233 PAGES.

"I might stop at a corner and be unable to comprehend what is in front of me. The feeling is a mixture of original intuition, a hesitant sense of the past, and a misleading familiarity with city life and from that combination arises a new, almost inscrutable map. This random, purely imaginary map leads me to think that I am someone else, someone who came into existence that very morning. And yet, becoming someone else does not so much represent a new beginning or personality but rather a new world, or the idea that reality and every individual has lost their memory, or put it to one side, and decided to admit me as a member who had thus far been a stranger, a new arrival."

"In his texts, which feature elusive, ethereal ghosts, I always come to the sudden understanding that nothing is happening but that what is happening is exceptional."
